Witnessing Watersheds

Informing science and telling stories about place and the rivers that connect us

At the University of Nebraska at Kearney, we work at the intersection of ecological research, communication, and storytelling about rivers, landscape, and place. Many of our activities are in collaboration with Platte Basin Timelapse and the Surface Water and Groundwater Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. We have three areas of emphasis:

Research

We study river systems and specifically changes associated with interconnected human and natural systems. Using remote sensing, image-analysis, acoustic monitoring and on-the-ground fieldwork, our research is focused on natural history, wildlife, hydrology, and technological methodology to understand ecosystem changes and aid in conservation.

Communication

Through writing, storytelling, and creating graphics and multifaceted digital media products, we seek to enhance ecological literacy and scientific knowledge, broadly around river systems. Our work strives to engage community, encourage dialogue, and convey information in a framework that is both informative and captivating for a wide range of audiences.

training

We train students and young professionals in multidisciplinary skill sets at the interface of ecology and communication. We focus on immersed and interdisciplinary learning through collaboration across disciplinary boundaries to work and learn from scientists, conservation photographers, documentary filmmakers, engineers, amongst other professional mentors.
